Pottsville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church is a confessionally Reformed church committed to reaching the River Valley with the hope of the Gospel.
Thanks for checking out the internet home of the Pottsville Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Our name is big, but our church is just the right size. Pottsville has doubled in population in the past decade, so there is a good chance that you are new here. We have been in Pottsville for over 150 years. We welcome you and are glad you are here. As you may drive past us every day on your way to work or school, we wanted to let you know who we are. The roots of our church reach deep into the soil of history; into the Carolina backcountry of colonial America and into the lowlands of Scotland. The founders of our church migrated to Arkansas in the 1850s from North Carolina, bound tightly together by shared commitment to the Scripture, a common Reformed confession of faith, and fierce love of freedom and opportunity. Today, the Pottsville ARP Church in downtown Pottsville maintains a faithful witness to the values and beliefs of those early settlers. Yet we are looking forward, growing together as followers of Christ and reaching those who do not know Him. We are a church that takes seriously the call to live as authentic Christians, but don’t believe it just because you read it on the Internet. Come and see for yourself what God is doing in Pottsville and the River Valley. We invite you and your family to join us this Lord’s Day for Bible Study at 9:45 am and Worship at 10:45 am. We are located on the square in Pottsville, right next to the Historic Potts Inn, at 11 East Ash Street, Pottsville, Arkansas. For more information, please contact us.

There is no dismay quite like it. That crushed look in the eyes of a child when they proudly present their latest masterpiece for mounting on the refrigerator and Dad asks, “what is it?” “Can’t you tell?” responds a quivering little voice. And immediately parental stammering and backpedaling begins. I learned long ago, after many parental fails, to ask “tell me about this one?” This little bit of painfully acquired wisdom has served me well. The old saying goes, “a man’s home is his castle.” While there is some comfort in this, it is worth remembering that the primary architectural goal of a castle is to keep others out. Castles have walls with battlements from which projectiles can be hurled and pots of boiling oil dumped on the heads of those who seek to gain entry. To say I was unpopular as a boy would be an understatement. I wanted to fit in and find acceptance, but there were three significant strikes against me – I struggled with my weight, I loved to read the World Book Encyclopedia for fun, and I wore Trax shoes. For those unfamiliar with vintage 80’s knock-off footwear, Trax were the K-mart Adidas want-to-bes. [ 517 more words ] https://pottsvillearp.wordpress.com/2019/02/15/knock-offs/
My mother was the consummate Southern cook. And my father was not an adventurous eater. We had fried chicken twice every week, roast beef once, and never anything that might remotely be construed as ethnic food. Every meal had white bread and some variety of gravy. The metric of culinary success in our home was how well the meal satisfied the tastes of my father, not whether it was a significant source of nutrition. I never liked to swim where I could not see the bottom. Growing up in Georgia, our lakes and streams were usually murky. Like the water used to rinse children’s paint brushes, our natural swimming areas always sported a milky, muddiness that left me fearing what might be lurking in the darkness, ready to nibble my toes or wrap itself around my legs. As a boy, when I arrived home from school each day, two priorities dominated my agenda. The first was to secure a snack — often something, not so healthy — and the second was to spend an hour watching television before diving into my homework – also not very healthy. Ted Turner’s fledgling super-station curiously juxtaposed two cartoons starting at 3:35 – “The Flintstones” and “The Jetsons.” One superimposed modern concerns, attitudes and lifestyles upon stone-aged men and women while the other superimposed futuristic technology and innovation upon contemporary concerns, attitudes and lifestyles. One of the common denominators of greatness in our modern world is a stint waiting tables. Famous and prominent people from all walks of life, from CEOs to Hollywood celebs, learned and honed many of the skills needed to achieve success in their fields while working as waiters. Actor Jon Hamm commented about lessons learned from waiting tables in a recent interview. [ 549 more words ] https://pottsvillearp.wordpress.com/2019/01/17/waiting-tables-2/
For our children, a stay in a hotel has many charms. The pool, of course, is at the top of the list. Hotels without pools fall into the “emergency only” category. Booking a room at such a venue is seen as a breach of paternal trust. But our children also enjoy the freedom to jump from one bed to another (before 9:00 pm) as well as the carb-overloaded cereal bins in the breakfast area. Join us for An Evening of Lessons and Carols, December 24 at 7:00 pm. For more info, go to https://pottsvillearp.wordpress.com/2018/12/06/an-evening-of-lessons-and-carols/
We will be meeting this morning for worship at 10;45. The roads are clear, but remember that River Road is closed at the train underpass, so you will need to select an alternate route this morning if you are coming from US 64.
Due to the continuing possibility of inclement weather overnight and temperatures dipping into the upper 20s, the Session has decided to cancel 9:45 am Bible Study tomorrow. We will evaluate the road conditions in the morning to determine whether it is prudent to continue with our regular Lord's Day Worship. Please check back in the morning . Also, remember that the bridge on River Road is under re-construction and the road is closed under near the train underpass. If you are coming from the west, take exit 84 and continue on 331 into Pottsville. If you are coming from the east, take exit 88, go over the train overpass on the bypass, turn left on Apache drive, then left on Pine Ridge and then left on East Ash.
Friends, due to concerns about the weather later this afternoon and evening, we will NOT be caroling today. We will reschedule for a date/time very soon.
The story of the coming of Christ in the Incarnation is the most dramatic story ever told. While it reaches a beautiful high point with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, there is much, much more to this story – a story that has its origins in eternity past and its implications in eternity future, a story of epic failure and dramatic rescue, a story that reveals a God who is quite different from the one our fears imagine. Our family has many Christmas traditions – the annual tree pilgrimage, dinner at The Grapevine, the Christmas Cake, the advent storyboard calendar, and iconic holiday movies, which for us include Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the ever-poignant, A Charlie Brown Christmas. Despite its ancient vintage, Charles Shultz’ classic cartoon commentary on Christmas confusion is spot on. What is the point of this ever-expanding season each year?
